Finding a data sheet

Using Find-a-data sheet

When you know the name of the data sheet you wish to view you can access the data sheet index by selecting the Find-a-data sheet button from the opening CPC window or after clicking the Search tab at the top of the Compendium screen.

Type a name or part of a name in the Search for box. You can use common or scientific names for pests, crops and natural enemies. Select type to limit your search to a particular category and/or taxonomic group. Specify how you want the search to use your criteria by selecting Begins with, Ends with, Contains or Exact match

The example search above generates a 7-page list of data sheets (20 Records per page). This includes the crop potato, potato blight (Phytophthora infestans), potato tuber nematode (Ditylenchus destructor), potato leaf hopper (Empoasca fabae) and numerous potato viruses. You may wish to be more specific than this.

You can decide whether to Include thumbnails in the search results - these are small pictures from the data sheet and may be switched off to reduce download time.

Click on the Search button to proceed to the Search results:
The red dot indicates a full data sheet.

The preferred scientific name is displayed in parentheses. This list is sorted first by exact matches and then alphabetically on the preferred name.

Click on the hyperlinked name to go to the Cover page for that data sheet (in the right hand frame) and the Table of Contents (in the left).

Content search

Use the Content Search to search for words or phrases in the text sections of data sheets, in the bibliographic database or in the Aspects Of Crop Protection library documents.

Entering search criteria

Type a word, several words or a phrase in the Search box then select from the drop-down list the type of search you want to use. The available options are: Select which areas of the Compendium you want to include in the search: Choose how many records to display per page and indicate whether you want to see a small picture (thumbnail) with each species in the search results. Note: pictures are not available for every species and may slow retrieval time.

Finally, click the Search button to execute the search. An intermediate screen will indicate the number of data sheets, bibliographic records and library documents that match your search criteria. Click on the hyperlink to browse the list of records.

Example searches

Entering the words biopesticide biocontrol and All words will search for all data sheets that contain the word biopesticide and the word biocontrol. Note: there is no need to use the word and in your search criteria.

Enter Biological control and Exact phrase with just the Control section selected to search for all data sheets that contain the phrase Biological control in the Control section of data sheets.

Diagnostic search

A separate Compendium feature enables you to search for pests based on a set of criteria (pest category, taxonomic group, crop host, country, symptoms or plant stage affected). This is called a Diagnostic search and a separate Training sheet has been prepared for this.

Hyperlinks and Softlinking

Hyperlinks

Many hyperlinks have been created in the text to help you move between different parts of the Compendium. Standard hyperlinks in pest data sheets include links to host plants from the List of Hosts, links to countries from the Distribution List, links to data sheets from the Taxonomic Tree and links to abstracts from the References for example.

Softlinking

In addition to the hyperlinks, other words and phrases in the Compendium text can be softlinked to entries in the Glossary, Data sheets or Bibliographic references. To select a name or term, highlight it by dragging the mouse over it. Then click on the Softlink button above the frame.

The system will recognize when you have selected a reference citation and will search for the reference to display in a new window. If you have selected another word or phrase it will check the Glossary definitions and the Data Sheet names and a box will display the search results, giving the number of matches, a list of the glossary definitions and a link to the view the list of data sheets.

This is a quick way of looking up text in other parts of the CPC.

Example - selecting a reference cited in the Biology and Ecology section of the Helicoverpa zea data sheet:

The reference is displayed in another window. This record also has an abstract.

Distribution maps

A small World View Map is displayed on the cover page of most data sheets. Clicking on this map will open a new window with a larger scale map. Selecting the Maps section in the TOC and clicking on the World-Normal map will display the same map in the right hand frame.

In the World View Map, clicking in an area of the map with the left mouse button will zoom in on the selected region (e.g. North America, Africa, Oceania); clicking with the left mouse button on a spot reveals the distribution status, reference citation and any footnotes that are available for that national record.

In a Regional Map, clicking on a spot displays the status and source of the national and subnational records. To return to the World View Map, click the Worldmap button above the map.

Pest distribution data

Sources of distribution records are cited in the Distribution list text section (found under Information in the TOC) and are displayed after clicking on a spot on one of the maps. Some full and outline pest data sheets have been supplemented with records from the PQR database (version 4.0, 2001) produced by EPPO (European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization). Different citations for a distribution record may indicate different distribution statuses, please consult individual references for more details.

Many data sheets include records from CABI Distribution Maps. CABI has been publishing the series of Distribution Maps of (Plant) Pests since the 1950s and Distribution Maps of Plant Diseases since the 1970s. Since 1997, these maps are known as CABI/EPPO Distribution Maps and are cited as CABI/EPPO. For maps published before 1997, CIE or IIE may be cited for the Pest Maps and CMI or IMI for the Disease Maps.

Outline data sheets have unchecked or unconfirmed "mined" distribution records which should be used with care.

In addition to national data, information may be available at the level of province/state for larger countries (e.g. USA, Canada, Brazil, India, China, Australia) and countries with detached parts (e.g. Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Spain, Portugal).

Crop distribution data

The distributions of many important crops are based on FAO data (FAOStat 2001).

Map symbols

To display the key to distribution symbols, click the Legend button below the map.

The distribution categories are self explanatory and all those included in the default display are records of presence of a pest. Unconfirmed reports and Eradicated pests are not displayed on these maps. Although the presentation of symbols can be changed by the user on the CD-ROM version, this option is not yet available in the Web-CPC.

On the World View Map, symbols are plotted to the centre point of the country. For some countries with detached parts e.g. USA, spots are included for mainland USA, Hawaii and Alaska in this view; in the Regional Maps, additional state/province symbols are plotted when available - these are smaller in size than the national symbols.

Climate and soil maps

Climate or Soil data (FAO-UNSECO, 1988) can be added to world or regional maps of a pest species by selecting the appropriate options from the buttons above the map or the TOC. The key to shading is provided by clicking on the Legend button below the map.

Overlay function

On the CD-ROM, it is possible to overlay the distribution of one species with another. This is not yet possible in the Web-CPC.

Pictures

In addition to a picture on the cover page, more images can be accessed by clicking over the cover page image or selecting Pictures from the TOC to display the set of thumbnails.

You can point to a picture to view the Caption or click on it to view it full size in another window. Alternatively, click on the caption in the TOC to display that picture full size in the right hand frame.

When a picture is displayed full size, there may be an additional Description.

The Copyright entry shows the owner of the rights to the selected picture. This is embedded into the picture when the picture is copied and should not be removed.

Statistics

Statistical information from FAOSTAT is available for crops (Production) and countries (Crop Production, Land Use, Agrochemical Trade and Consumption). This can be accessed from the TOC by clicking:

Further details of this source can be obtained by clicking on the FAO logo below the data grid. This will take you directly to the FAO website.

For crops

Only the Production data set is available from crop data sheets. The following example shows part of the maize statistics window.

Sort By changes the order in which the data are presented in the charts and data window. The initial setting displays the countries in alphabetical order. The other options are Average Production during 1990-2000 and Average Area for the average land area used to produce the crop. Production is used for generating the Top 10 Countries unless Area is selected here.

The Return drop-down menu allows you to select how many records to return. Some crops may contain hundreds of records and it will take longer to display All records.

Click either the bar or pie chart button to display the Top 10 countries that produce maize. Tick or untick the checkboxes for the Years to plot from 1991 to 2000 to include the data for the selected years in the bar charts. Charts are presented in another window and have options to change chart type, sorting and year. After selecting a new chart, click the Refresh button.

The production figures for the selected crop are displayed in the grid in the lower half of the window. Use the Selected View drop-down menu to display either the production or area records or select Both to display both sets of data. The grid can be scrolled to view Average production (in 1000s of tonnes), Production for the given year, Average area of production (in 1000s of hectares) and Area for the given year for each country or group of countries.

It is also possible to select a country in this data grid and view its Top 10 crops by clicking on the pie chart or bar chart to the left of the country.

For Countries

Three data sets are available from the TOC: Production, Land use and Trade. Click on the data set required to display the statistics in the right hand frame.

For the Production data set, a similar window to that shown for crops is presented. Data can be sorted by Crop, Average Production or Average Area. Charts of the Top 10 crops (by production or land area) can be produced for the country of the data sheet. It is possible to display the Top 10 countries for a given crop by selecting a chart icon from the data window.

The Land Use data set displays data showing land use by Total Area, Land Area, Agricultural Area and Types of agricultural area. It is displayed in 1000s of hectares. The data are for the years 1990-1998. Pie and bar charts can be generated for selected years to plot.

The Trade data set refers to agrochemical trade and displays, in US dollars, the imports and exports for the pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and disinfectants. Data are for the years 1990-1999 inclusive. No charts are available with this data set.

Crop loss data

This new data set is only available for 11 major crops: barley, groundnut, maize, oilseed rape, potato, rice, seed cotton, soyabean, sugarbeet, tomato and wheat.

It provides data on crop yields with and without crop protection and losses attributable to pathogens, viruses, animal pests and weeds for 19 geographical regions. From the TOC click on:

In the left-hand frame, picklists for selecting a geographic regions and for changing the crop are presented. The figures are presented in the data window in the right hand frame.

Click on Refresh Grid after changing the selections.

Hyperlinks to more information on the Economic Impact of pests are available below and also include Disease yield loss and assessment and an Annotated bibliography.

An alternative route to this data is via the Economic Impact tab at the top of the CPC window.

The available data are described below:

Actual describes the Area (1000 ha) on which the crop is grown, the actual Yield achieved (kg/ha) and the Production as both 1000 t and $ million.
Attainable describes the Yield  and Production values that could be achieved if no crop losses occurred.
Actual losses due to... describes the losses (% losses, Yield losses expressed as kg/ha and Production losses as 1000 t and $ million) that occurred due to the different pest and pathogen groups.
Losses without crop protection due to... describes the Yield losses that could occur if Crop Protection practices were not applied.

The Graph and Worldmap buttons above the data window provide access to the data in an illustrated format.

Making the most of data sheet information

There is a vast amount of information in the CPC in the form of text, pictures, maps, search results, taxonomic hierarchies, full text, references, abstracts, statistics, identification keys etc. Different users will have different requirements for information and will wish to put the CPC data to different uses such as printing data sheets, generating reports or extension leaflets in word processing software or creating presentations in applications such as Powerpoint.

Please refer to Fair Use of Compendia for guidance on how CPC contents may be used.

Generating reports, copying data and printing

Generating a report

Expanded TOC levels show which sections are available for individual access or inclusion in a report. These include all the data sheet text sections (under Information), Maps, Pictures and User notes.

To include a section in the report, put a tick in the checkbox next to the section.

In the example on the right, 5 text sections have been selected for the report. Maps and pictures could also be included.

When you have selected the required sections, click the Report button at the top of the TOC. To re-order a section, highlight the section in the list of sections and use the Up and Down buttons to move it in the list. When the list is re-ordered correctly, click the Report button and the html report will be displayed in your browser.

Printing a report

It is simple to print your report - either select the Print icon from your browser menu or right click on the report and select Print.

Printing statistics and crop loss data

These cannot be selected from the TOC for a report, but can be printed (e.g. from Internet Explorer) by right clicking on the table and choosing Select all and then Print. The charts can also be copied to other software by right clicking on the chart and selecting Copy.

Copying data

In Internet Explorer you can copy text, pictures, maps and charts to the clipboard by right clicking in the appropriate window and selecting copy. If you are in a text window, you may have to select the text you want or use Select All from the right button menu before you can copy.

To insert your selection into word-processing software or other editing package, use CTRL+V.

Shorter selections of text (but not pictures and maps) can be copied to the clipboard using CTRL+C.

For tips on exporting and printing from the Aspects of Crop Protection Library, Bibliographic database, Taxonomic identification tools and Phytosanitary Decision-Support System, see the separate training sheets or Help files on these topics.
