Introduction to Datasheets

Back to Sheet Index

Detailed information on the individual pests, natural enemies, crops and countries included in the CPC can be found in their datasheets.

The current edition of the CPC includes the following:

Contents

Full, outline and basic datasheets
Pest, natural enemy, crop and country datasheets

Full, outline and basic datasheets

Full datasheets have been commissioned from a wide range of specialists selected by CABI and checked and edited by staff at CABI. Species datasheets have also been verified by a small number of experts to check taxonomy and general consistency.

The pests that have been included as full datasheets have been selected because they are of significant economic or phytosanitary importance to agriculture. Similarly, the natural enemies and crops that have been treated in this detail are those of major importance. The length of texts, number of sections and level of detail varies greatly between datasheets and generally reflects the amount of research and available literature.

Most full datasheets concern species, or subspecific taxa in the case of some plant pathogens. In some cases, e.g. for some crops, it has been more convenient to prepare a full datasheet on a genus. The type of datasheet is indicated in the Datasheet index on the CD-ROM or Search results list on the Internet.

Individual authors are not acknowledged in the datasheets because each datasheet has multiple authors, verifiers and editors. A list of Contributors is available from the main CPC menu.

Outline and basic datasheets are available for a much broader range of pests and natural enemies. Approximately 20,000 species names and synonyms, and links with their hosts, geographic data and natural enemies, have been downloaded from bibliographic databases held at CABI and elsewhere by a process of 'data mining', and automatically cross-checked. These data provide useful indications of the identity, distribution and relationships of these species, but it must be noted that data in this form have not been manually checked by experts and should be used with care.

Outline datasheets contain basic data supplemented with information from the Informix Pest Biology database of the Central Science Laboratory, UK.

Pest, natural enemy, crop and country datasheets

Each datasheet has a Cover Page which includes summary data, a picture when available and a world distribution map. Below is an example of a cover page for a pest datasheet on the CD-ROM.

The buttons on the Menu Bar at the top allow you to access more information in the datasheet, more pictures, regional maps and other datasheet features. In the Web CPC, the drop-down menus provide the same access.

Datasheet text on pests, crops and natural enemies is subdivided into the main sections listed below. Some sections have been subdivided for quicker access in the Web-CPC. Full data sheets contain all or most of the sections for that datasheet type, partial datasheets contain only a few sections and this information will often take the form of unchecked lists.  Further subheadings have been added to some long sections during editing. The amount of information in each section varies greatly between full datasheets and generally reflects the amount of published research or the importance of that species to agriculture.

You can add your own User note section by using the Notepad function.

Pests include the arthropods, nematodes, molluscs, fungi, bacteria, protozoa, viruses and virus-like organisms, vertebrates and weeds affecting crop production.

The text in the Country datasheets includes General data, Selected statistics from the World Bank and contact details for the National Plant Protection Organization. These are all presented on the cover page. The following is an example from the Web-CPC.

Updating datasheets

Pest, natural enemy and crop datasheets have a Last modified date at the top of the cover page. The CPC is updated annually at present. If new information is available, individual datasheet sections may be updated or the whole datasheet reviewed during this process.
