Tree datasheets

Detailed tree datasheets are available for approximately 1200 species of tree, bamboo and rattan, selected for their economic importance. These knowledge reviews are compiled under standard subject headings by a panel of subject experts at institutions worldwide. All input is edited to CABI's established standards and then verified by a team of world experts. Any chosen word or words in the text is available for Softlinking - through a dynamic tool that targets matching content in all other parts of the Compendium, dynamically and in real time.

Tree datasheets may be returned from a Species Selection Module search, a Find a datasheet search or a Compendium Search. You can also Softlink to these datasheets.

The tree datasheet cover page consists of a text summary, a cover picture and a world map containing recorded distribution. The cover page text contains brief information on the identity of the tree and its usage.

Further elements of the datasheet are accessible from the main Menu Bar, the composition of which will change to reflect the contents of the datasheet.

The menu choices are:

Information

The Information dropdown menu contains links to textual information and tables, giving more information about the tree species. Click on an item on the list to see more. This information will appear on the screen, replacing the cover page. To return to the cover page, select that option from the Information menu. The categories used in the Information menu come from a defined list:

Criteria used in the Species Selection Module include information derived from a number of sections including Descriptors, Environmental Amplitude, Silviculture and Management, Uses and Disadvantages.

Distribution information is also represented graphically as Maps.

The reference list contains entries from the Bibliography, and where possible each reference is linked to a CAB Abstract.

Further information about aspects of forestry is found in the Library and in the Glossary.

Pictures

Pictures for a tree species may be accessed from clicking the cover page picture, or by selecting Pictures from the menu bar. For more information on Pictures, see Exploring a datasheet.

Maps

Maps may be accessed by clicking on the world map on the cover page, or by selecting from the options on the Maps dropdown menu on the menu bar. Maps plot information recorded in the Distribution table. References for tree distribution are not normally presented, but information is presented on whether the tree occurs as natural stands, in plantations, or in both. For more information on maps, see Exploring a datasheet.

Notes

The Notepad function is available from datasheets. This allows you to record your own species-specific notes, as well as more general notes.

Report

To generate a report in HTML from a datasheet, open the Report menu and select Generate Report. This allows you to build a report containing the sections you want. For more information, see the separate section on Reports.
