Getting Started

This is a suggested route through the Internet version of the Forestry Compendium. It may help you to explore its main features, demonstrate them to someone else, and start addressing your own problems in Forestry. We suggest you print this document and use it as a guide.

There's also plenty of Help along the way in the Forestry Compendium itself, and there's always a Feedback link at the bottom of the screen if you need to ask about anything or make suggestions.

We hope you enjoy it!

Finding the home page

Point your browser to http://www.cabicompendium.org. Click on Forestry Compendium and then on Enter, to take you to the home page of the FC.

On the home page, move the mouse over the buttons on the right of the screen to display information about each feature.

On the left of the screen are buttons to tell you about the Forestry Compendium project, its history and future, its Development Consortium, and about Fair Use of content.

Finding a datasheet when you know the name

Click the Find-a-datasheet button (on the right of the screen). Enter your Username and Password and click the Login button.

On the Find-a-datasheet page type northern black wattle in the Search for box. Accept the other default settings  and click the Search button.

From the Search Results page click northern black wattle (=Acacia auriculiformis) to go to that datasheet cover page.

Exploring a datasheet

On the Acacia auriculiformis cover page click the map. Resize the browser window if necessary. Move your mouse over a dot to see the country to which that record refers. The key to symbols is at the bottom of the map. Try the soil type and climate links (from pale green menu bar). Try clicking on a region of the map, e.g. Asia, to see a regional map.

Select Pictures from the pale green menu bar. Click on "Show all pictures" to show a thumbnail view of the pictures. Click on any picture for a larger view.

Click on the Information menu on the left-hand side of the pale green menu bar to see the further information available for the datasheet.

Click the Botanical Features item to display that text.

In the first paragraph of the Botanical Features text highlight the word bole by double-clicking with the mouse. Click the Softlink button on the pale green menu bar above the text. Click on the term again in the list of glossary results. The Glossary definition for bole will then display. Close the Glossary window. (Note that the Glossary can be accessed directly via the Search link on the beige menu bar.)

From the Acacia auriculiformis Botanical Features text, click on Doran and Turnbull, 1997 at the end of the first paragraph (blue text) and click the Softlink button. The full citation and abstract will be displayed. Note that you can link direct to the full citation and abstract for all text citations (in blue); alternatively, use the Softlink feature.

Close the Abstract window. Note that you can click on Information to select a link to return to the Acacia auriculiformis cover page.

Select Protection from the Information menu list on the Acacia auriculiformis cover page. Scroll to the bottom of the window to reveal a list of pests of this species. Select Lasiodiplodia theobromae from the Pest List. The appropriate datasheet is loaded, demonstrating a link to a Pest datasheet.

Click the back button in your browser to return to the Acacia auriculiformis datasheet coverpage.

From the Information menu, click on References. In the References text try clicking on one of the View Abstract links to display the full abstract.

From the Information menu select Taxonomic tree. Note that you can use the tree as a tool for navigation between related species by clicking on the names and/or taxa. Click the back button in your browser to return to the Acacia auriculiformis datasheet coverpage.

Generating a custom datasheet report containing several sections

From the Acacia auriculiformis datasheet, click the Report button on the pale green menu bar, then click Generate Report. Select several sections, including pictures and maps, by double-clicking to include the item in the selection box. You can then re-order the selected sections by highlighting them and using the up and down arrows. Click the Submit button to build the report.

Searching the contents

From the beige menu at the top of the page click the Search link and then (on the next page) the Compendium Search item.

Type riparian in the search box. Put a tick in the checkboxes for Datasheets, Bibliograpy, Library and Glossary and then click the Search button.

From the results page click the more details link on the Datasheets line. From here you could go to another datasheet. For example, choose the grey Importance text link for Hopea odorata. The search term 'riparian' is highlighted in yellow in the text.

Click the Back button on the browser to go back to the results page and click the more details link for the library. The Library is also available via the menu (beige) at the top of the page.
Click the Back button on the browser to go back to the results page and click the more details link for the Bibliography. This will display the bibliography matching the search criteria. The search term is again highlighted in yellow.

Species Selection Module

Click on the Species Selection Module on the menu (beige) at the top of the page, or select Species Selection Module from the Main Menu or the Species Selection Module item on the Search page.

Read the introduction to the module and click to continue. We'll select a tree that can be used to produce certain products, and can be grown under particular conditions.

Select Wood from the Uses section, then from the options select Building poles from the Roundwood options, and beams from the Sawn or hewn building timbers option (in the first and second sections, respectively). Search by clicking on the button on the bottom right of the screen (scroll down to see this).

Select Altitude from the Environment section, and in the Altitude screen select the Range tab and put in an altitude range of 1000-2000 (m). Select Search again.

Select Temperature, also from the Environment section, and in the Temperature screen enter a single value for the mean annual temperature of 18 (°C). Select Search again.

The criteria for the search are now displayed at the base of the screen. To see what species fit these criteria, first select View Results to prioritize our criteria (we'll use the default), then Select Search again.

A colour-coded list of matches and partial matches to the different criteria is displayed in order of suitability (equally suitable species are displayed in alphabetical order) in batches. Select the number of Records to display to change from the default of 50 records. From the list of results you could go to another datasheet, or return to the previous pages to modify or re-prioritize your selection. Note that a yellow warning triangle indicates a 'Disadvantage' for that species; click on the triangle to read the Disadvantage text.

Tree Seed Suppliers Directory

Click on the Tree Seed Suppliers link on the menu (beige) at the top of the page, or go to the Tree Seed Suppliers Directory from the Main Menu or the Search page. Click on Tree Species. Type the species name in the search for box.
Then click the Search button to see a list of suppliers. Click on a supplier name to see further details.

Note that seed supplier information is available from a tree datasheet (click on Seeds on the pale green menu bar).

Browsing the Glossary

Click on the Glossary link on the menu (beige) at the top of the page, or go to the Glossary from the Main Menu or the Search page.

Type stem cutting in the glossary Search for box and click the Search button to search the Glossary of forestry terms. Try the Spanish, French and Portuguese radio button options on the base of that page to see the term and its definition in translation.

Country datasheets and statistics

Select the Find-a-datasheet option (via Search on the beige menu bar or from the home page). Type Sweden in the Search for box. Select Exact match from the drop-down list and click the Search button.

In the Search Results click the Sweden link to go to the country datasheet cover page, containing information from the World Bank and a map. Point to or click the FAO Stats button on the datasheet menu bar (pale green). Then click the Forestry option from the list. Using the defaults selected, select the Top 10 Items option to plot Cumulative Production of the top 10 most important products in Sweden over all years for which statistics are available. To change the Statistics to show Import or Export data use the toggle option in the bottom right hand of the plot. To plot other factors, change the years to plot, etc., return to the grid.

Close the bar chart window; use the back button on your browser to return to the country cover page.

Statistics from USDA-FAS are also available (FAS Stats) for some countries.

Adding personal notes

From the Sweden datasheet, select the Notes menu on the datasheet (pale green) menu bar, then select Add a Note. (Note that the Notepad feature is also available from the top (beige) menu bar.)

Enter some personalized information in the text area and enter text in the Title and Author fields. Click Save to save the data. The added information will then appear with the information for Sweden (available from the Notes menu). Notes can also be appended to tree datasheets, in the same way.
