Economic Impact
This is available from the Main Menu.
The Economic Impact facility shows summary tables of
economic data for selected crops and regions. 11 major crops have been selected (rice, wheat, maize, barley, potatoes, soyabean, cotton, groundnut,
oilseed rape, sugarbeet, tomato). Crop losses due to weeds, animal pests (arthropods,
nematodes, mammals, slugs, snails and birds), pathogens and viruses have been
estimated from published data and are provided for 20 geographical regions.
There are several links on the screen to documents describing the data sources
and how to interpret the data.

Selecting a crop and region to display
Select a crop and region from the lists on the left side of the screen and then click the Refresh Grid button. The data for the selected region and crop will then be displayed.
Using the map and chart facilities
When the selected data is displayed, use the Worldmap and Graph buttons on the menubar at the top of the screen to see graphical views of the data.
When a map is displayed, click on a region on the map to see a chart view of the data.
Modifying crop prices
The crop prices can be modified and the modified prices used in the calculations. To do this, click on Edit crop prices at the top of the page and enter the new price in the text box alongside the crop name you wish to update. Once complete, click the Update all prices link to save the changes. The next time The Economic Impact data is queried or refreshed the new prices will be used in the crop loss calculations.
Actual production
This describes the Area (1000 ha) on which the crop is grown, the actual yield
achieved (kg/ha) and the production as both 1000 t and $ million.
Attainable production
This describes the estimated yield that could be achived if no crop losses occurred,
and provides the corresponding production values.
Actual losses due to
This describes the estimated losses (% losses, Yield losses expressed as kg/ha and
Production losses as 1000 t and $ million) that occurred due to different pest and pathogen groups.
Potential losses due to
This describes the estimated yield losses that could occur if crop protection practices
(physical, biological or chemical crop protection) were not applied.
