Getting Started

This is a suggested route through the Internet version of the Animal Health and Production Compendium. It may help you to explore its main features, demonstrate them to someone else, and start addressing your own problems in animal production. We suggest you print this document and use it as a guide.

There's plenty of Help along the way in the AHPC itself, and there's always a Feedback link at the bottom of the screen if you need to ask about anything or make suggestions.

We hope you enjoy it!

Finding the home page

Point your browser to http://www.cabicompendium.org . Click on Animal Health and Production Compendium and then on Enter to take you to the Home page of  the AHPC.

On the Home page, move the mouse over the buttons on the right of the screen to display information about each feature.

On the left of the screen are buttons to tell you about the AHPC project and the data in the Compendium, its Development Consortium, and about Fair Use of content.

In the middle of the screen is the primary Compendium Search Interface. This allows a simple search of the whole Compendium by typing in one or more search terms. This tool allows a search of the whole of the Compendium or, by using the tick boxes beneath the search input box, selected areas of the product.

Finding a datasheet when you know the name

Click the Find-A-Datasheet button on the right hand side of the Home page. Enter your Username and Password and click the Login button.

On the Find-a-Datasheet page type MCF in the Search for box. Accept the other default settings  and click the Search button.

From the Search Results page click MCF (malignant catarrhal fever) to go to that datasheet cover page.

Exploring a datasheet

On the MCF cover page click the map. Resize the browser window if necessary. Click on a dot to see the published reference for that dot. The key to symbols is at the bottom of the map. Try the soil and climate links on the top-right of the map window. Try clicking on a region of the map, e.g. Europe, to see a regional map.

Close the map window by using the 'Back' button or by selecting 'Return to Cover Page' from the Information drop-down menu available from the left side of the blue menu bar.

Click the picture on the MCF cover page to show a thumbnail view of the pictures. Click on any picture for a larger view.

Run your mouse over the Information menu on the left-hand side of the blue menu bar to see the further information available for the datasheet.

Click the Pathology item to display that text.

In the first paragraph of the Pathology text highlight the word necrosis by double-clicking with the mouse. Click the Softlink button on the blue menu bar above the text. Click on the term again in the list of glossary results. The Glossary definition for necrosis will then display.
Close the Glossary window. (Note that the Glossary can be accessed directly via the Search link on the yellow menu bar - top right.)

From the MCF Pathology text, highlight O'Toole et al., 1995 at the end of the second paragraph and click the Softlink button. The full citation and abstract will be displayed.

Close the Abstract window. Note that you can select from the Information menu to return to the MCF cover page.

Click on Bos taurus (cattle) in the Animals affected list on the MCF cover page (or via the Animals affected item in the Information menu). The appropriate datasheet is loaded, demonstrating a link to another datasheet.

Click the Back button in your browser to return to the MCF datasheet.

From the MCF information menu, click on References. In the References text try clicking on one of the View Abstract links to display the full abstract.

From the MCF cover page, click on alcelaphine herpesvirus 1 to load a pathogen datasheet; select Taxonomic tree from the Information menu. Note that you can use the tree as a tool for navigation between related species.

Generating a custom datasheet report containing several sections

From the MCF datasheet, run your mouse over Report on the blue menu bar and select Generate report. Select several sections, including pictures and maps, by double-clicking to include the item in the selection box. You can then re-order the selected sections by highlighting them and using the up and down arrows. Click the Submit button to build the report.

Searching the contents

From the yellow menu at the top of the page click the Search link and then (on the next page) the Compendia Search item.

Type animal housing in the search box. Make sure that there is a tick in the checkboxes for Search in Datasheets, Bibliography records and Library and then click the Search button.

From the Search Results page click the more details... link on either of the sets of results from the datasheets results section. The first set of results selects datasheets with the term in one of the names of the datasheet and the second includes datasheets where the search terms have been found in any of the text sections of the datasheet. (From here you could go to another datasheet or individual text section.)

Click the Back button on the browser to go back to the Search Results page and click the more details... link in the Bibliography results box. This will display the bibliographic records containing the search terms.

Click the Back button on the browser to go back to the Search Results page and click the more details... link in the Library results box. This will display a prioritized list of documents from a free text search of the AHPC Library using the search terms entered.

Return to the Compendia Search page (also the default Home page of the AHPC) by using the 'Back' button on your Internet browser. Click on the advanced search link under the search-term entry box. This leads to a window with various other options of ways to use search terms.

Note that the Compendia Search can also be used to search the Glossary and Drug Database, the latter contains a searchable index of generic and trade names for veterinary medicines, vaccines and pesticides (see below for more details).

Searching for diseases

Click the Disease Search button on the right of the Home page or click on the Search link at the top of the page and then click the Disease Search item. (Wait for the country list to load.)

Select Cattle from the list of animals affected.

Select Digestive from the list of systems to display the appropriate list of signs in the box. Double-click on Anorexia in the list to move it to the selected signs list. You may have to scroll down to see the selected signs list.
(Optional: select the country or countries by highlighting them in the list and use the > button to move them to the selected countries list. Note that you can also select countries to exclude from the search. Here, we will select Brazil - notice that the list of Brazilian states is automatically included with our selection.)

Then click the Search button to search using all the entered criteria. From the list of results you could go to another datasheet.

Searching for breeds

Click on the Breed Search button on the right of the Home page, or click the Search link at the top of the page and then click the Breed Search item.

Select the appropriate criteria from any of the Animal category, Husbandry type, Product or Countries sections. For example, from the list of Sheep and goat categories, highlight Wool.

Then click the Search button to search using all the entered criteria. Click on a breed name or picture from the list of results to go to a breed datasheet.

Searching for drugs

Click on the Drug Search button on the right of the Home page or click the Search link at the top of the page and then click the Drug Search item.

Type your search in the box (click to search in trade names or active ingredients); specify which databases to search (one or all). Click the search button to display the results and move from the list of names to further information.
For example, search for tetracycline as an active ingredient and select Contains from the search criteria list. You can then link to information from various drug databases by clicking the binocular icon.

Browsing the library

Click on the Library link on the yellow menu at the top of the page or on the Library button on the right of the Home page.

A contents list is provided on the left of the page. Navigate by clicking on folder names to open them; click on a title to display the text on the right of the page. Note that the contents include documents (html or pdf format), weblinks and expert systems. Or, use the free-text search tool on the right of the page to find relevant documents containing a word or phrase.

Click on Home (yellow menu) to return to the Home page.

Country datasheets and statistics

Select the Find-A-Datasheet option. Type New Zealand in the Search for box. Select Exact match from the drop-down list and click the Search button.

In the Search Results click the New Zealand link to go to the country datasheet cover page, containing information from the World Bank. Point to or click the FAO Stats button on the blue menu bar. Then click the Livestock Stocks option from the list. Click on Top 10 items for a chart view of the top 10 items for New Zealand.

Other information available from country datasheets include trade statistics from the US Department of Agriculture - Foreign Agricultural Service and breed data from FAO's Domestic Animal Diversity - Information System (DAD-IS). DAD-IS information can also be retrieved from livestock species and breed datasheets, from their respective 'Information' drop-down menus.

Close the bar chart window; use the back button on your browser to return to the country cover page. (Statistics may also be reached via the main menu.)

Adding personal notes

From the New Zealand datasheet, select Notes, Add a Note from the blue menu bar. (Note that the Notepad feature is also available from the yellow menu bar.)

Enter some personalized information in the text area and enter text in the Title and Author fields. Click Save Note to save the data. The added information will then appear with the information for New Zealand (available from the Notes menu).
