Drugs database

Although called the 'Drugs database' on the Compendium, this database contains information on drugs, vaccines, feed additives and other veterinary products from the following sources:

• Compendium of Data Sheets for Veterinary Products - National Office of Animal Health Ltd. (UK)
• The Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank (USA)
• Green Book (FDA Approved Animal Drug Book) (USA)
• Index of Veterinary Specialities - MIMS (South Africa)
• Manual de Produtos Veterinários - SINDAN (Brazil)
• PUBCRIS - Registered Product Database (Australia)

Each of these resources contains information on between 1000 and 3000 veterinary products. It is essential that before starting a search, the user reads the 'About these databases' text, linked from the bottom left hand corner of the Database Drug Search screen. This contains details on the date and coverage of each of these sources of information.

Searching the drugs database

Combined indices of either the trade names or the generic names of the active ingredients of all the products covered in the entire database can be searched.

To make a search, type the trade or generic name of a drug in the Search for box, select whether you wish to search the list of generic or trade names and which of the databases you wish to search. There is an option to search All databases.

Search Results

A successful search displays a list of products that match your search. In the all database search, a successful hit will also display which database the entry comes from. To open the full record for the product, click on the icon.

FARAD

There are several categories of information for FARAD entries:

• NADA number - This is the number assigned to each New Animal Drug Application by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA). There is a single unique NADA number that is assigned to each drug product approval.
• Manufacturer
• Accessibility - Whether the drug is available on veterinary prescription only, or over the counter.
• Active ingredients
• Product type
• Route of administration
• Current status - Whether currently available on the market or not.
• Formulation
• Species - This field gives specific information on the use of the drug in particular livestock species (see below).
• Additional information

FARAD is particularly useful for obtaining minimum 'withdrawal times' for drugs used in food animals. The USFDA, which must approve all drugs meant to be marketed for use in animals, establishes tolerances for drug residues to ensure food safety. The USFDA also establishes 'withdrawal times' or 'withholding periods' which are times after drug treatment when milk and eggs are not to be used for food, and during which animals are not to be slaughtered. This allows time for the animals to eliminate the drug residues. The species-specific data form gives, for each drug where appropriate:

• Slaughter withdrawal - Time in days for withdrawal of the drug after treatment at the recommended dosage to allow animals to eliminate drug residues.
• Slaughter withdrawal for a higher recommended dose
• Milk withdrawal - Time in hours for withdrawal of drug before which milk should not be used as food.
• Indications - Specified indications for which the drug should be used.

The Green Book

Selecting information for a product using the Green Book database will launch a data form with the following information:

• NADA no. - This is the number assigned to each New Animal Drug Application. There is a single unique NADA number that is assigned to each drug product approval.
• Company name
• Active ingredients
• Exclusivity period - Under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, the approval of a New Animal Drug Application (NADA),or of a supplemental NADA, may in some cases provide the sponsor of the application with a period of exclusivity, as defined in the Act. This exclusivity period allows the sponsor to market the approved product for either 3 or 5 years, during which time no generic copy may be approved (in the case of 3-year exclusivity), or no generic application may be submitted (in the case of 5-year exclusivity).
• Expiration date - The date on which the exclusivity period expires.
• Green book supplement - This date refers to the Monthly Update (Section VIII) of the 'FDA Approved Animal Drug Products' listing, in which the original or supplemental NADA approval was described. Back issues can be viewed at the web site: http://dil.vetmed.vt.edu .
• Patent number - Under the Federal, Food, and Cosmetic Act, sponsors of approved animal drug products are required to report to the FDA, information on certain patents pertaining to new animal drug products. Patent numbers of individual products are given, where relevant. Users of the database are advised not to rely solely upon the patent information given here in determining the patent status of a listed new animal drug.
• Expiry date - Expiry date of Patent is given where appropriate.

Index of Veterinary Specialities - MIMS interface

Selecting information for a product using the Index of Veterinary Specialities database will launch a data form with the following information:

• Product name
• Manufacturer/distributor name
• Method of application
• Indications. Some groups of animals are abbreviated in this section, Can - canines; F - felines; B - bovines; O - ovines; Cap - caprines; P - pigs; E - equines.
• Dosage
• Adverse effects (S/E)
• Contraindications (C/I)
• Withdrawal times (W/T)
• Other precautions (P/I)

Information about products has been taken directly from the printed product. For full explanations of the abbreviations used, see the printed product (for details see text, About these databases, linked to the bottom left corner of the Drug Database Search window). In some instances page references are given on the drug information form. These are only of relevance to the original printed product.

Compendium of Data Sheets for Veterinary Products - National Office of Animal Health Ltd. interface

Selecting information for a product using the Compendium of Data Sheets for Veterinary Products database will launch a data form with all the information supplied to NOAH by the manufacturer for publication in Compendium of Datasheets. Information includes:

• Presentation
• Uses
• Dosage and administration
• Contraindications
• Pharmaceutical precautions
• Legal category (see below)
• Package quantities
• Marketing authorization number

Legal categories are abbreviated as follows:

PUBCRIS - Registered Product Database interface

Selecting information for a product using the PUBCRIS database will launch a data form with the following information:

• Company - Name of manufacturer/distributor.
• Category - Category of product, for example, veterinary pesticide or veterinary medicine.
• Active ingredients - The active ingredients are given in a scrollable list.
• Hosts - Species of animal for which the product was developed.

Manual de Produtos Veterinários - SINDAN

Selecting information for a product using the Manual de Produtos Veterinários database will launch a data form with the following information (all in Portuguese):

• Licenciado no Ministério da Agricultura - Licence number for the product as held by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture.
• Proprietário/Representante - Product manufacturer/distributor.
• Espécies a que se destina - Species of animal for which the product was developed.
• Fórmula - Formulation of the product.
• Indicações - Indications for use of the product.
• Dosagem - Dosages
• Administrações - Method of administration of the product.
• Precauções - Precautions
• Apresentação - Presentation of the product.
