Breed Search
The Breed Search facility in the Compendium can be used to search for livestock and poultry breed datasheets using various production and geographic criteria. The Breed Search facility allows searches for datasheets on breeds of cattle, goats, pigs, poultry and sheep. Details of other animal groups such as camels and llamas are also covered in the Compendium in species datasheets. Species datasheets can be found using the Find-A-Datasheet facility available from the home page.
Click on the Breed Search button on the home page to launch the Breed Search window, or via the Search item on the top menu bar.
Before making a search, please read about the information contained within the Breed datasheets by clicking on the 'About the Data' link at the bottom left of the screen.
The Breed Search window allows you to choose criteria used to select animal breed datasheets.
The criteria include:
Animal Category
Highlight an animal production type to select it. This selection is mandatory to search for a breed using this tool.
Husbandry Type and Product
Choose a Husbandry Type and Product using the scroll bars and selecting by mouse
click. These criteria are not mandatory to a search and so can be left
unselected. It is best to leave these boxes unselected in searches for versatile
animals that may have more than one use.
Country(ies)
Highlight countries by clicking on them and move them into the 'Countries to
Include' selection box using the appropriate arrow button. Countries can
similarly be 'de-selected' by highlighting and removing from the selection box
using the other arrow button. If no countries are included in the selection box,
an all-inclusive, global search will be performed. You can also select countries
to exclude from the search; this removes breeds that occur in
particular countries or regions.
After making the required selections, click on the Search button to the right of the window.
Search Results
Running a search takes you to the Search Results, which shows a list of Breed datasheets selected using the criteria given in the search. Your search criteria are presented below the results list. The coloured dot to the left of the breed name is an indicator of how much information is contained within the datasheet (see the key above the table).
A particular datasheet can be viewed by clicking on its name.
