Getting Started

This is a suggested route through the Aquaculture Compendium. It may help you to explore its main features, demonstrate them to someone else, and start addressing your own problems in aquaculture production.

There's plenty of Help along the way in the Compendium itself, and there's always a Feedback link at the bottom of the screen if you need to ask about anything or make suggestions.

We hope you enjoy it!

Finding the Home page

Point your browser to http://www.cabicompendium.org/ac/start.asp - this is the Home page of  the Aquaculture Compendium.

On the left of the screen are buttons to tell you about the Aquaculture Compendium project and the data in the Compendium, its Development Consortium, and about Fair Use of content.

To go to a datasheet when you know its name

Click the Find-A-Datasheet button. Enter your Username and Password and click the Login button.

On the Find-a-Datasheet page type common carp in the Search for box. Accept the other default settings  and click the Search button.

From the Search Results page click common carp (Cyprinus carpio) to go to that datasheet cover page.

Exploring a datasheet

On the common carp cover page click the map. Resize the browser window if necessary. Click on a dot to see the published reference for that dot. Try the climate link. Try clicking on a region of the map, e.g. Europe, to see a regional map.

Close the map window.

Click the picture on the common carp cover page to show a thumbnail view of the pictures. Click on any picture for a larger view.

Point to the Information menu on the left-hand side of the blue menu bar to see the further information available for the datasheet.

Click the Genetics item to display that text.

In the third paragraph of the Genetics text highlight the word haploid by double-clicking with the mouse. Click the Softlink button on the pink menu bar above the text. Click on the term again in the list of glossary results. The Glossary definition for haploid will then display.
Close the Glossary window. (Note that the Glossary can be accessed directly via the Search link on the beige menu bar.)

From the common carp Genetics text, highlight Bakos and Gorda, 2001 in the middle of the second paragraph and click the Softlink button. The full citation and abstract will be displayed.

Close the Abstract window. Note that you can click on Information to return to the common carp cover page.

Select to see [more...] Diseases of common carp from the cover page. In this list a red disc to the left of a datasheet's name indicates that we have a Full datasheet on this topic. A blue disc indicates that we have an Outline datasheet, and a Black ring indicates a Basic datasheet (see About the Compendium for more information). Click on spring viraemia of carp in the list of diseases. The appropriate datasheet is loaded, demonstrating a link to another datasheet.

Click the Back button in your browser to return to the common carp datasheet. Many other links are present between datasheet types - for example, selecting the Growout Management link from the cover page of the common carp datasheet shows links to overview topics: systems-based reviews of particular growout systems and ecosystems.

From the common carp information menu, click on References. In the References text try clicking on one of the View Abstract links to display the full abstract. Select Taxonomic tree from the Information menu. Note that you can use the tree as a tool for navigation between related species.

From the common carp cover page, click on Carp polyculture in ponds in greater Mymensingh, Bangladesh to load a case study relevant to this topic. Note that from the cover page there are links to Issue-based reviews on key topics relevant to this case study. From the cover page of this datasheet, select Bangladesh.

Note the country datasheet cover page, containing information from the World Bank and links to other related content. Click on the FAO Stats button on the pink menu bar. Then click the FishStat - Production Values option from the list. Click the Top 10 items link at the top of the table and plot the quantities of the most commonly cultured items in this country (less than 10 items will be shown if data is not available for 10 items).

Close the statistics window; use the back button on your browser to return to the country cover page, and go back to the common carp datasheet by using back buttons or by searching for it using the simple search on the home page.

Generating a custom datasheet report containing several sections

From the common carp datasheet, click the Generate Report link on the pink menu bar. Select several sections, including pictures and maps, by double-clicking to include the item in the selection box. You can then re-order the selected sections by highlighting them and using the up and down arrows. Click the Submit button to build the report.

Searching all the contents of the Compendium

From the beige menu at the top of the page click the Search link and then (on the next page) the Search Compendia item. Select an advanced search.

Type ricefield aquaculture in the search box to search all of the words. Put a tick in the check boxes for Search in Datasheets, Bibliography and Library and then click the Search button.

From the Search Results page you can select datasheets and other content by following the hyperlinks.

Browsing the library

Click on the Library link on the beige menu at the top of the page.

A contents list is provided on the left of the page. Items are arranged by Topic and by Publisher (or contributing organisation). Navigate by clicking on folder names to open them; click on a page icon to display the link to a datasheet or metadata of a library document. Note that the contents of the library include documents (html or pdf format), weblinks and search tools. Or, use the search tool on the right of the page to find relevant documents containing a word or phrase. Note that library documents are also linked to from datasheets. On each Information menu is an item which links to Related Library Documents.

Click on Home (top left) to return to the home page.

Adding personal notes

From any datasheet, select Add a Note from the blue menu bar. (Note that the Notepad feature is also available from the beige menu bar.)

Enter some personalized information in the text area and enter text in the Title and Author fields. Click Save Note to save the data. The added information will then appear with the information for that datasheet (available from the Notes menu).
