Aquaculture Compendium Library

The library in the Aquaculture Compendium is organised around an expandable tree. The 'branches' of this tree are constructed from the Issue and System datasheet themes. Attached to the branches of the tree are:

Searching the library

The library contains a great variety of material and it is advised that users spend some time familiarizing themselves with its content. It is possible to print out a whole expanded tree of the contents table (see under Table of Contents below).

As well as HTML documents, the library contains many documents in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. If you have not done so already, you will need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. This can be done by clicking on the icon link to the left.

The library contents can be searched using the Free Text Search or browsed using the expandable table of contents.

Table of Contents

The library contents have been organised at the top level by Topic, Publisher and Data components.

The library contents tree (on the left side of the library search interface) can be navigated by clicking on folders to open them and clicking on them again to close them. An expanded folder will either display datasheets (mainly issues and systems), document metadata (with associated html or pdf documents), internet links , links to relevant datasheet sections on a particular theme , data components (mainly search pages), or subfolders which can be opened to see lower levels of classification. Select an item by clicking on it, and it will automatically load and appear in your browser. Note - most links can be opened by clicking on the icon or the name of the item, but where there is a subfolder specified and a datasheet - i.e. the icons   occur together, clicking on the subfolder or the name will expand the list, and clicking on the datasheet icon will open the datasheet in a new window.

Obtaining a printout of the content

The whole table of contents can be expanded by clicking on the Expand Tree link above the contents table. A printout of the whole, expanded contents can be obtained by clicking the right-hand button of your mouse when the cursor is on the contents table and selecting Print from the resulting drop-down menu. The whole table should be allowed to expand before right-hand mouse clicking, otherwise only that part of the table expanded at that stage of clicking will be printed. Note that this may be a very large document - 100 organisations have supplied around 1200 documents to include in the library.

Free-text Search

Enter a word or phrase in the search box and then click the Search button. The results will be ranked according to the number of hits per document, with documents containing the highest number of hits being displayed first. Next to each document in the search results there will be an icon indicating whether the document is an HTML file or an Acrobat PDF file. There will also be an indication of the size of the file. You may go to the document directly or via the metadata screen.

Content

Issues and system datasheet texts

The 'branches' of the Table of contents tree are constructed from the Issue and System datasheets. These datasheets exist as nodes around which other content is organised. They may also contain text which gives an overview of a particular subject:

For example, in the tree you can navigate down to a heading on 'Disease surveillance and risk analysis':

Selecting the closed book icon or the text opens the tree further at this point:

There are no more issues or system subheadings to be opened up at this point under the main heading (these are indicated by   ).

Selecting the icon at this stage would take you out of the library tree - opening the datasheet on this subject in a new window.

Opening up the prompt to view Related Library Documents will take you to a list of documents on this subject (see below).

Documents and document metadata

Documents are presented in the tree sorted by Topic and Publisher (or contributing organisation). Selecting opens a list of all the Library documents on this issue:

Each document has a metadata summary page. Selecting a document metadata icon opens a metadata record:

From here the document can be downloaded by selecting the relevant icon . Note that some documents in the library are very large (especially where they have had to be scanned from old documents) and take a long time to download. In this case select the item to download and continue to browse the Compendium in another window. File size in Kb is indicated in each case.

Links to datasheet content are given from the metadata pages under the heading Context.

Some library documents may be only relevant to a particular species or country, having no broader issue or system-based context. In that case navigate to these documents via the list of documents by Publisher or via the Cultured Species or Country datasheets.

Weblinks

Web sites that can be reached by clicking on the Internet links within the library will be displayed on your browser within a new window.

Predefined links to datasheet sections

Links in the tree are made to related content where it occurs in particular datasheet sections . For example in the section of the tree on Behaviour a link can be made to datasheet sections on the Behaviour of particular cultured species:

Selecting opens a search results page which indicates where the Behaviour section has been completed for a Cultured species datasheet:

Data components

Compendium search and navigation functions are also included in the library.

How the library in the CD version differs from that of the Internet version of the Aquaculture Compendium

There are some differences in the content and searching capabilities of the library on the CD version of the Aquaculture Compendium in comparison with that of the Internet version.

Searching
The Internet version of the Aquaculture Compendium is searchable using the table of contents, or a free text search. On the CD, there is an index-based, keyword search, and table of contents, but not a free text search capability.

Contents
There are some differences in contents of the Internet version of the Compendium in comparison that of with the CD version. These differences arise because: The contents of the CD version of the Aquaculture Compendium is limited by the storage memory available on the two CDs in the set. Consequently, there are some sections of acquired material that are not available on the CD version due to omission in order to include other information judged more valuable to the Compendium.
